In recent years, development of various types of flat panel displays such as a liquid crystal display, a plasma display and an EL display has been actively made for their advantages in small size, light weight and low power consumption. Among these, the liquid crystal display has been widely used as a display unit of a portable information terminal, a PDA and a portable television receiver, etc. due to its properties of light weight, thin shape and low power consumption.
In particular, the active matrix type liquid crystal display using a TFT element as a switching element has high resolution and is capable of gray scale display, so it has been more frequently used. On the other hand, an AC driving system is generally used for the liquid crystal display.
FIG. 9 shows an example of a configuration of a conventional active matrix liquid crystal display device. The liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel 1 in which a first substrate and a second substrate are disposed with a space therebetween, and a driving circuit (driving IC) 2 which supplies a driving signal to the liquid crystal display panel 1. The first substrate (array substrate) includes a plurality of pixel electrodes (TFTs), a plurality of gate bus lines (G), a plurality of drain bus lines (D) and a plurality of TFTs (switching elements) 3 which are connected to the gate bus lines (G) and the drain bus lines (D), respectively. The second substrate (counter substrate) includes a common electrode and an alignment film.
A light-transmitting portion 17 is formed in a portion of the liquid crystal display panel 1 which is opposite to the second substrate (counter substrate) side. On the other hand, a light-shielding portion 18 is formed in a portion of the liquid crystal display panel 1 which is opposite to the first substrate (array substrate) side. The light-transmitting portion 17 and the light-shielding portion 18 prevent light leakage between pixels.
