Judging by the reactions on Game Vixen Zone, a forum where people talk about and share content related to attractive female video game characters, a modder that goes by the name of Vergil had nude mods out as soon as March 30, the same day (!) that Dead or Alive 5: Last Round was released on PC.
Hopefully Koei Tecmo takes the Shenmue mod in the spirit with which it is intended. Meanwhile, the inevitable raft of Dead or Alive nude mods is already widely available. Koei Tecmo will no doubt target those before any others.
An unnamed man is being sued by Koei Tecmo for selling a Dead or Alive DVD full of nude mods. The specific game in question is the Japanese-only release Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation, which features the characters in extremely small bikinis. The franchise is best-known for its female characters, but there is never any nudity included in the games themselves, though some of the bikinis are barely there. Regardless, Koei Tecmo was not amused when they discovered that a DVD with nude mods was being sold on an auction site.
While Yohei Shimbori didn't mention nudity specifically, he did declare that if the Dead or Alive games were not played in "good moral and manner," they would not make them for the PC anymore. It is unclear if Shimbori will instruct Koei Tecmo to halt producing the titles for the PC platform after the nude mods found their way online and for sale. In true rebellious fashion, modders have responded by creating various nude mods for the game, much to the consternation of the developer Team Ninja. To add salt to the wound, the modders worked extra hard and were really prompt in their quest to bring nude skins to the game. Needless to say, the mods are restricted to the PC version of the game, which had released on March 30.
User mods are a serious cause of strife between the gaming community and content creators. This is true for various reasons ranging from mods that enable cheating to potentially scandalous examples such as nude mods. Team Ninja's Shimbori had already made his apprehension towards releasing "Dead or Alive 5 Last Round" on the PC clear back in February. The Game Director had threatened PC gamers that this would be their last game for the PC platform, if the modding community were to release nude mods.
Meanwhile, there's no official word from either the developer or the publisher Koei Tecmo on this matter. Even YouTube videos demonstrating the mods are being taken down one after another. The takedowns aren't solely restricted to nude mods either, according to PC Gamer. Benign mods affecting gameplay and visuals have also been targeted by the publisher.
At the time he put his foot down, it seemed that Shimbori was addressing nude mods specifically, but in a follow-up statement to Eurogamer in March, he and Producer Yosuke Hayashi said, not very helpfully, that it was about "our obligation to protect our characters, as developers, especially because mods created might take on a life of their own out in places we aren't aware of." But they never got around to mentioning what would be tolerated, and some Steam users are claiming that Tecmo is cracking down on more conventional mods providing post-processing effects and new or improved textures. Others, however, say that all the banned mods were actually nude mods; either way, right now nobody seems entirely sure what is and isn't allowed, and that confusion is irking the modding community. One user claims he created a mod to remove Ayane's makeup to make her appear more like she did in DOA2, but he's afraid to post it because he doesn't want to get the boot from Steam.
